The Coalition for a Prosperous America joined several other organizations in submitting this March 13, 2009 Official Comment to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative today. Canada and Mexico are challenging the U.S. country of origin labeling rules for meat and produce. This letter advocates a vigorous USTR defense of those rules.

Fifty four Congressional Democrats sent a letter to President Obama on February 26, 2009. It is a pretty good letter. It notes the President's campaign promises on trade and makes specific proposals on ways to fix trade policy. |

Re: President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board
Dear Mr. President:
The Coalition for a Prosperous America represents the common interests of 2.7 million citizens through our association, individual, company and union members. For two years, farmers, ranchers, manufacturers and organized labor have worked together in CPA towards a national trade strategy to boost the American economy both in the near and in the longer term.
We appreciate your courage and ambition in addressing issues of prime concern to us in the face of the current recession. While we applaud your initial steps, we are deeply concerned that the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board (PERAB) is not sufficiently representative of domestic producers of food and manufactured goods. Without a better balance, the administration runs the danger of receiving advice that is dangerously tilted in favor of multinational interests who are in fact partly responsible for the erosion of America’s ability to invest, produce and export. |

Re: Buy American Provisions: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
Dear President Obama:
The Coalition for a Prosperous America represents over 2.7 million citizens through its agricultural, manufacturing and organized labor members. We advocate the reform of trade policy to promote the interests of those who produce in the United States as a major step towards fixing our economy.
We write to urge you to support inclusion of the provision in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act requiring that U.S. taxpayer money on projects be spent on goods produced in the United States to the maximum extent possible. There is considerable room to expand the Buy American provisions without violating our obligations under international law or agreements. The Senate bill S. 366 does this. |
