DETAILS:      Today, foreigners own $13 trillion worth of American assets and China is our largest creditor.  What are the implications for U.S. hegemony?  In his hot-off-the-press book (published March 4), Eamonn Fingleton posits that if we remain complacent in our trade policy the Chinese economy will surpass ours within the next two decades.  In his remarks Mr. Fingleton will examine why American producers are not able to compete with the Chinese system by exploring the elements of China’s mercantilism, including its political system, suppressed consumption system, selective rule enforcement, and blackmailing of American corporations.  A formerForbes and Financial Times editor, Eamonn Fingleton has been analyzing East Asian economic developments since the 1980s.  He is the author of Blindside and In Praise of Hard Industries: Why Manufacturing, Not the Information Economy, Is the Key to Future Prosperity.  Mr. Fingleton will be available for a limited time after the event to sign copies of his new book In the Jaws of the Dragon: America’s Fate in the Coming Era of Chinese Hegemony.
