You are all invited to the sixth Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) Issues Forum.
TOPIC: A Competitive Tax Plan for America
SPEAKER: Michael Graetz, Yale Law School
TIME: 10:30 until 12:00, Thursday May 8
PLACE: Offices of Wiley Rein LLP
1776 K Street, NW
COST: $10 for CPA members
$20 for non-members
DETAILS: Americans are badly taxed. The U.S. relies heavily on border adjustable income taxation that is regressive, places U.S. businesses at competitive disadvantage, and discourages much-needed savings and investment. Tax compliance costs rise every year as we add pages and loopholes to the tax code, which is already four times the length of War and Peace. One of America’s most influential experts on tax policy, Michael Graetz has fleshed out the elements of a simple, fair, and competitive tax plan in his latest book 100 Million Unnecessary Returns. In his remarks, Mr. Graetz will examine why we need fundamental tax reform now, what features our new system should include, and how we can surmount the broken politics of taxation.
Michael Graetz is Justus S. Hotchkiss Professor of Law at Yale University. He has served as assistant to the secretary and special counsel at the Treasury Department, as Treasury deputy assistant secretary for tax policy, and as a member of the Commissioner’s Advisory Group of the Internal Revenue Service. He is the author of The U.S. Income Tax: What It Is, How It Got That Way, and Where We Go From Here and The Decline (And Fall?) of the Income Tax. Mr. Graetz will be available for a limited time after the event to sign copies of his new book.
