American manufacturers, workers and ag producers are getting clobbered by U.S. free trade policies, and they need to stick together in fighting for protection from unfair foreign competition.

That was the thrust of a speech delivered in Rapid City Friday by Brian O'Shaughnessy, chairman of Revere Copper Products, a company founded in 1801 by Paul Revere -- yes, that Paul Revere. O'Shaughnessy is also a board member of the Coalition for a Prosperous America, which advocates for trade policies that protect American industry.

Farmers Union speaker: Trade deficit continues to pull U.S. economy down

America needs a national economic goal, which begins with reforming the nation's trade policies that are hemorrhaging this country's jobs and treasure overseas, said Michael Stumo of the Coalition for a Prosperous America.

Stumo was a featured speaker Friday at the Nebraska Farmers Union convention, which is being held in Grand Island this weekend.

While agriculture has constantly enjoyed a trade surplus, Stumo said current trade policies, including the concept of free trade, could cause future concern for Nebraska's farmers and ranchers.

PITTSBURGH -- The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) has come out in support of the Reciprocal Market Access Act of 2009, but steel interests say that while the concept of reciprocity appears reasonable, making trade concessions while failing to gain foreign access is of no value to the United States.

Sheffield, Mass.-based CPA is a national non-profit organization representing the interests of 2.7 million citizens through its farmer, rancher, manufacturing and organized labor association and company members. Its stated goal is to achieve trade policy for the benefit of American citizens, farms, factories and working people.

'Buy American' hits free-trade wall PDF Print E-mail

The following article by Leslie Jorgensen appeared last week in The Colorado Statesman here. 

On the face of it, “Buy American” seems to be a logical, patriotic and economically sound message. However, the few bills backing that concept that have emerged recently from the Colorado Legislature have had a hard time making it out of committee and on to the House and Senate floor.

An exception is a 2008 bill sponsored by former state Rep. Dorothy Butcher, D-Pueblo, requiring that the Colorado government buy American flags made in the United States to fly above its agencies.

CPA Supports Reciprocity Bill to Rebalance Trade

The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) expressed support today for new legislation introduced by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY-28) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) called the “Reciprocal Market Access Act of 2009.”  The bill will help solve the problem of the U.S. making tariff concessions in trade negotiations, while failing to gain effective foreign market access in return.
