Free trade was developed as a counter to the persistent trade imbalances caused by mercantilism.  What have we learned in 200 years? David Ricardo articulated the concept of comparative advantage in 1817, a basis for what is now popularly known as free trade. He discusses the merits of trading English cloth and Portuguese wine between those countries.

Most modern trade agreements are titled “free trade.” But would David Ricardo agree? And is trade always win-win? If not, when is it win-lose and what does that mean for trade policy?

Dr. Ralph Gomory will explore how the economics of trade between some countries can be a gomory-ralph.jpgwin-win proposition, but can also be a win-lose result.  In other words, when will one country gain at the expense of its trading partner and what are the policy implications of this economic reality?  Comparative advantage is dynamic rather than static or unchanging. Countries create comparative advantage which can differ across many industries. How should this understanding change US trade negotiators' strategy in pursuing our national economic interest?

Ralph Gomory, former head of IBM's Research Division, is a mathematician. His research led to the creation of new areas of applied mathematics. After his career at IBM, Gomory became the president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Dr. Gomory co-authored, with economist William Baumol, “Global Trade and Conflicting National Interests," The MIT Press; 1st edition (January 22, 2001). Dr. Gomory joined New York University Stern School of Business as a Research Professor in April 2008.Stumo_2013_150x188.jpeg
