Hatch awaits details on plan to reopen NAFTA, but wants to keep TPP alive

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) says he is keeping an open mind on President-elect Trump’s emerging trade agenda -- although he plans on pushing to keep at least parts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement alive despite Trump’s pledge to withdraw the United States from it on day one of his presidency.

Asked if he would support Trump’s plan to renegotiate NAFTA with the threat of U.S. withdrawal from the agreement hanging over the table, Hatch demurred, stopping short of stating either outright support or opposition to Trump’s pledge.

“We’ll have to look at that,” Hatch told reporters regarding renegotiating NAFTA. “I supported NAFTA. I don’t think there’s any of these particular national or international agreements that are perfect, and we’ll have to see what [Trump] says.”
