Where I live (Shenandoah Valley of VA), the government is the largest employer. Indeed, in VA as a whole, the government plus government-dependent industries, such as education and health care, dominate the electorate.
So I would like to know where to find a quality index of government jobs that would facilitate comparison of private sector and government jobs in terms of pay and benefits. Also, is there any way to differentiate private sector jobs that are basically government-dependent from others?
My working hypothesis is that standard categories, such as “professional” vs “skilled trades” are less informative than government vs private.
