European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations will be on hold for quite some time after the U.S. presidential election, and that she is unsure of whether President-elect Donald Trump will want to pick up the talks.

For quite some time TTIP will be in the freezer. What happens when it's defrosted, I think we'll have to wait and see,” she said during a Nov. 11 press conference in Brussels.

In the meantime, she will continue to have meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, she said in comments to reporters ahead of a Nov. 11 Foreign Affairs Council meeting on trade issues, according to an informal translation.

But the EU and U.S. are not expecting to schedule any more formal negotiating rounds because it doesn't make sense to do so, she said. However, technical work will continue in hopes of locking in the progress the two sides have made.
