Updated: Massachusetts-based shoe maker New Balance and its congressional supporters on Wednesday (April 27) secured an initial win in their fight to ensure the Department of Defense (DOD) buys U.S.-made athletic shoes for military recruits, as legislation put forward by Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-MA) to force the Pentagon's hand was included in an annual defense policy bill.

Tsongas successfully added the provision as an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act during a markup on Wednesday by the House Armed Services Committee. The provision was included in an en bloc package of amendments that was approved by voice vote, according to a Tsongas aide.
“I thank my colleagues on the Armed Services Committee for stepping up for our servicemembers and domestic manufacturing and supporting this amendment,” Tsongas said in an April 27 statement.
